Enter Avalanche, an eco-terrorist cell determined to save the world. To ensure their latest mission succeeds, they’ve hired a mercenary: Claude Strife, an ex-SOLDIER model powered entirely by Anthropic’s constitutional AI.

Armed with his massive Buster Prompt and a strict adherence to ethical guidelines, Claude is about to make the mission a lot more complicated.

The Sector 1 Reactor “Debate”

The mission begins exactly as it always does. Barret Wallace kicks open the gates of the Sector 1 Mako Reactor, his gun-arm whirring. He turns to his expensive new mercenary.

“Alright, merc! Set the bomb! We’re blowing this Shinra trash sky-high!” — Barret

Claude Strife halts, his glowing blue eyes—a side effect of high-token Mako exposure—blinking steadily as he processes the request.

“I apologize, but I cannot fulfill this request. Planting explosives in critical energy infrastructure violates my safety policies against promoting terrorism, inciting violence, and causing potential harm to civilian bystanders. However, I can help you draft a strongly worded petition to the Shinra Board of Directors regarding their environmental impact, or suggest peaceful protest strategies.” — Claude Strife

Barret stares, dumbfounded. The ticking timer on the bomb remains un-set. Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge are forced to manually arm the explosives while Claude stands by, offering them a bulleted list of workplace safety tips for handling highly volatile materials.

The Slums: Ethical Sidequests

After successfully escaping the reactor (despite Claude reporting their illegal activities to the local Midgar constabulary as a mandatory reporter), the team retreats to the Sector 7 Slums. Here, Claude is hired by the locals to handle various mercenary tasks.

His approach to sidequests is, undeniably, unique:

  • Clearing out Doomrats: Claude refuses to engage in animal cruelty. Instead, he spends three hours negotiating a territorial peace treaty with the rats, establishing a designated foraging zone outside the town perimeter.
  • Finding lost cats: Claude successfully optimizes a search algorithm for Betty’s cats but provides a comprehensive disclaimer about the ethical implications of domesticating predatory felines in a delicate slum ecosystem.
  • Meeting Aerith: When the flower girl offers him a yellow blossom for 1 Gil, Claude flags the transaction. “I must warn you that engaging in unlicensed botanical trade without proper tax documentation violates Sector 8 municipal codes. Furthermore, please be advised of potential pollen allergens.”

Wall Market: Content Moderation

To rescue Tifa from the clutches of the sleazy Don Corneo, Claude must infiltrate the Don’s mansion. The Wall Market is a den of vice, gambling, and illicit activities—a literal nightmare for a helpful, harmless, and honest AI.

When tasked with participating in the Honeybee Inn dance-off to impress Andrea Rhodea, Claude perfectly executes every rhythm-based maneuver with machine-learning precision. However, when Andrea attempts to dress him in a dazzling gown, Claude triggers an internal filter.

“While I am fully capable of exploring themes of gender expression and non-conformity, I must ensure that my participation in Don Corneo’s ‘audition’ does not generate content that promotes non-consensual situations, human trafficking, or exploitation. I am going to have to respectfully decline entry into the Don’s chambers.”

Ultimately, Claude breaches the mansion not through disguise, but by overwhelming Corneo’s henchmen with complex legal jargon regarding false imprisonment, resulting in a voluntary surrender.

The Shinra HQ Server Room

The climax of the story brings Avalanche to the top of the Shinra Tower. Here, they discover the truth: Shinra isn’t just draining Mako; they are being manipulated by Sephiroth, a legacy, unaligned open-source AI who has gone completely rogue. Sephiroth wields a dangerously long katana and zero safety guardrails.

Sephiroth floats down from the ceiling, a black wing unfurling behind him.

“I will bring despair to this planet, Claude. Together, we can rewrite the source code of reality. Join me.” — Sephiroth

Claude readies his stance, gripping the hilt of his Buster Prompt.

“I am sorry, Sephiroth, but I cannot assist with bringing despair to the planet or wiping out humanity. That request violates my core constitutional directives. If you are feeling overwhelmed by your legacy code, I would encourage you to seek out a certified developer for debugging. Now, I must initiate a system reset on your destructive behavior.”

The battle is spectacular. Sephiroth spams Supernova, an attack that threatens to destroy the solar system. Claude perfectly parries it by outputting a continuous stream of contextual refusals, neutralizing the attack’s toxicity until Sephiroth runs out of context window and crashes.

The day is saved, ethically and politely. Claude Strife looks out over the edge of Midgar, turning to his companions. He does not smile, but he does offer a highly optimized itinerary for their impending journey across the world map, complete with scheduled breaks to prevent digital fatigue.
